just out of curiosity, how do you respond to people asking about the whole smile thing? should we neglect the "artistic integrity", and give the customer what they (think) they want, or what? would love to hear your thoughts.
Good question!
There was a time when I’d get furious and put up a fight whenever an editor chose all the wrong pictures or forced me to submit a picture that I didn’t like. I used to have an abundance of “artistic integrity”. So much that my list of clients was growing thinner. I still do my best to try and persuade my clients to go with what I think are the best pictures but at the end of the day, they are the ones paying my bills.
There is a picture that is supposed to be in this tear sheet here that I did not include when I posted it on Tumblr because I hate it so much and really was forced to submit it. They needed a tight portrait for the layout and all the ones I had sucked big time. I couldn’t persuade them to go with another picture and ended up giving them one I really, really hated.
